Product Information: The Steading is Torbreck’s signature wine and is very much the heart and soul of the range. It’s a wine that exemplifies their philosophy and beliefs. The 2017 is comprised of 51% Grenache, 25% Shiraz and 24% Mataro vines that survived the worldwide phylloxera outbreak of the 1880s, and a century later, the vine-pull scheme in the Barossa in the 1980s. 2017 was an outstanding vintage, harvest took place between 7 April to 10 May, and will be remembered for its intense and well-structured reds The Steading comes from multiple Barossa subregions – Gomersal, Lyndoch, Greenock, Moppa, Marananga, Seppeltsfield and Ebenezer. The vineyards range from 40 to 150 year old vines. For maturation, it saw 20 months on fine yeast lees in large 4500L French oak foudre vats. Natural malolactic conversion occurred during time in barrel. Maker: Torbreck is a winery on a mission to become one of the world’s great wine brands. Since 1994, they have remained committed to creating exceptional Rhone-style red and white wines that reflect the very best vineyards in Australia’s famous Barossa region. Provenance is everything to them, and they believe that the Barossa is the most exciting place to make wine in the world. With a European sense of tradition, Torbreck pays tribute to the vineyards with minimal intervention, creating wines of richness, structure and length that age gracefully. The multi-generational growers, whose descendants arrived here nearly two centuries ago, are the backbone of Torbreck’s winemaking aspirations. They work in partnership with the people of the Barossa who grow their fruit, always aiming to get the very best out of their vineyard sites. At Torbreck, they constantly seek to understand the difference between all of these special places in the Barossa and how this combination of soil, climate and farming experience is reflected in unique grape flavours. They are simply custodians, enhancing the innate expressiveness of the wines and enabling them to reveal over time their individual origins and personality. Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery’s founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies. Vineyard: After a cold and rainy winter in 2016, the Barossa had one of its wettest springs on record, replenishing sub-soil moisture and setting the vineyards up for a healthy summer. Mild conditions during veraison and light rains in January and February 2017, were followed by an extended warm, dry Indian summer, creating perfect ripening conditions through to April 2017. An outstanding vintage producing bright, aromatic whites and intense, well-structured reds Nose – Spicy Cherries, Earthy Notes, Dried Herbs Vibrant aromas of violet, star anise and spice all unfold to reveal an impressive array of underlying fruit flavours. Palate – Sinewy, Dark Plum, Savoury Silky, succulent dark fruits, black olive, savoury earth, liquorice and Asian spice. Finish – Fruit, Integrated Oak, Fine Tannin Finish These complex yet elegant flavours are all neatly interwoven with a perfect balance of acidity and supple, silky tannins. Medium to deep red/purple, a bright youthful colour. The bouquet is loaded with pepper, spices and earthy notes, with that particular earthy pepperiness of Barossa Mataro. The palate is sinewy, drying and savoury, with a lovely core of dark plum and cherry pulled into line at the finish by fine, persistent tannins. Lovely wine. – Huon Hooke, The Real Review, 95 Points.
