Joh Jos Prüm is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the Mosel region of Germany, known for producing some of the finest Riesling wines in the world. The history of the estate can be traced back to the early 20th century when Johann Josef Prüm established his winery. Today, the estate is under the direction of Katharina Prüm, who has continued the family legacy of producing stunning Riesling wines. The vineyards are situated on slopes with steep inclines that allow for optimal sun exposure, and the slate soil provides a unique minerality that is a signature characteristic of Joh Jos Prüm wines. The wines produced by Joh Jos Prüm are known for their balance, complexity and exceptional aging potential. The Kabinett wines are light and elegant, with notes of citrus, apricot and mineral. The Mosel wine region is situated along the Mosel River in Germany. This region is renowned for producing some of the best Riesling wines in the world. The steep slopes of its vineyards, which rise from the riverbank, provide ideal conditions for grape cultivation. The unique terroir of the region, which consists of a combination of climate, soil, and vineyard sites, produces wines with a distinct flavour profile. Joh. Jos. Prüm’s vineyards are a hallmark of the estate’s success. The winery maintains a total of 14 hectares of holdings in several vineyards, including Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. All of these sites are exclusively dedicated to growing and harvesting Riesling grapes for Joh. Jos. Prüm. Of these sites, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich are the most essential for the winery, both in terms of quantity and quality. Seventy percent of the vines across these vineyards are ungrafted, indicating that the winery holds true to traditional winemaking practices. Depending on the specific vintage, the average annual production of wine is typically between 10,000 to 13,000 cases. Prüm’s vineyards are dedicated solely to Riesling production, with the Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Graacher Himmelreich vineyards being the most important. Riesling Auslese is a type of sweet white wine that is crafted from late-harvested Riesling grapes. The grapes are hand-picked and left to mature on the vine, which results in a high concentration of natural sugars. This process produces a wine that is known for its rich, honeyed sweetness and intense flavors of apricot, peach and citrus. The level of sweetness can vary depending on the winemaker’s preference, but typically, Riesling Auslese is sweeter than other Riesling wines. The German word “Auslese” translates to “selection,” indicating that only the best grapes are chosen for making Riesling Auslese. The Joh Jos Prüm Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel Museum Release 2011 presents a dessert-style wine that is both lush and balanced. On the nose, it delivers a delightful blend of peach, floral and orchard fruit notes, with a touch of light honey adding to its complexity. The palate reveals excellent depth and concentration, with peach and a variety of white and gold orchard fruit providing upfront sweetness and complexity. As the wine develops, it gains more expressive and open tropical fruit notes, which are balanced by a tart and vibrant acidity towards the back. The brilliant deep gold colour of the wine, along with its honey, clover, peach and varied orchard fruit aromas, make for an extraordinary nose that just keeps evolving over time. The wine’s complexity is spectacular, with a delicious interplay of rich stone fruit flavors, balanced acidity and delicate spice. The wine finishes with honey, bursting acidity and stony notes, providing a remarkable and uplifting experience that is both special and memorable. So lusciously ripe, with notes of mango and guava, this is an explosion of sweet fruit, honey and flowers. Searing citrus acidity cuts through the palate, highlighting layers of crushed stone and tea leaf that add complexity. It’s so exquisitely delicate, but lingers endlessly on the finish. – Wine Enthusiast, 95/100 Points Pale golden yellow. Candied apricot, clove, nut oil and a touch of smoky botrytis on the nose.
