Pooley Wines, established in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley, began as a retirement plan with a small vineyard on the banks of the Coal River in southern Tasmania. What started as a distraction soon flourished into a premium cool-climate site. With the dedication of three generations of the Pooley family, their Cooinda Vale vineyard became renowned for its meticulous care and unique microclimate. In 2003, they expanded their estate with the purchase of Belmont and established the Butcher’s Hill vineyard. The Coal River Valley, home to Pooley Wines, boasts a historic river plain with diverse alluvial soils, including mudstone, sandstone, sandstones, shales, coal measures and dolerite injections. The Butchers Hill vineyard benefits from basalt sediments and ferricrete deposits, while the Cooinda Vale vineyard features shallow, sandy soils. The region experiences a unique climate, influenced by both the Southern Ocean and continental factors. With lower rainfall and interaction with surrounding bodies of water, the Coal River Valley exhibits more extreme temperatures and distinct seasons. The Butchers Hill vineyard, situated on a steep north-facing slope, enjoys ample sunlight, protection from cold winds and excellent soil drainage. The iron oxide deposits in the soil contribute to the production of complex and robust wines. In contrast, the Cooinda Vale vineyard experiences greater climatic variations, including frosts, snow and heatwaves, with its shallow, sandy soil producing delicate and refined wines. The Butchers Hill Vineyard located in Richmond at the historic Belmont Lodge was established in 2003. The vineyard is a prominent feature to the Richmond landscape as it protrudes from the borders of the town. The steep north facing slope of this site starting from 30m-100m above sea level means that it receives some very long sunlight hours, protection from cold southern winds and increased drainage of soils. The ferricrete attribute of the soils not only hold heat and water longer as they are darker but the iron oxide also interacts with the production of flavonoids in the fruit and typically produces wines that are complex and robust. There are currently 6ha of vine planted on this property in total.
