Pressing Matters R9 Riesling 2022
$41.99
Product Description: The R9, with 9 grams of sugar per litre, is our most popular level of sweetness (in this case, off-dryness). The residual sugar, although only 9 grams, is enough to broaden the wine on the palate and the acidic lemon and lime found in the R0 give way to the sweeter versions of the fruit. The wine offers a delightful bouquet of sherbet, Tahitian lime zest, meyer lemon, poached pear, and honeycomb. Its slightly generous palate is balanced with clean, fine acidity, resulting in a lingering finish. The overall experience is simply moreish, leaving you craving for another sip. The 2022 Tasmanian vintage was a modest one, like 2021 but with better and higher yields than 2020. A warm and dry spring was followed by a significant amount of rainfall towards the end of summer. Despite this, it was an overall good year, with exceptional fruit grown across the Coal River Valley. After selective picking, the fruit is gently bag pressed and cold settled for 48 hours. Post racking, the juice is inoculated with a neutral yeast and fermented at cool temperatures for around three weeks. After the ferment has been stopped at the required sugar level, the wine spends around 6-8 weeks on lees before being prepared for bottling. Tasmania seems to do residual sugar in riesling just about better than anywhere in Australia, notable examples aside. Good bet these Pressing Matters wines too. – Mike Bennie Maker: Two families brought together from a love of wine supported by a passionate and talented team. Greg Melick and wife Michelle founded Pressing Matters in 2002, inspired by the potential of the neighbouring Morningside Vineyard to produce the noble European varieties of Riesling, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Cabernet. The first vintage was in 2006.Greg’s love of Mosel and Burgundy wines inspires Pressing Matters but Greg’s role as father and grandfather are his proudest achievements. Not long after, the opportunity to unite the Morningside vineyard with Pressing Matters saw the Hall family join the Melicks as partners in late 2019. A friendship formed from a love of burgundy and holidays shared in the family home in Meursault now fuels the next stage of the Pressing Matters story. Significant investment in a new winery, tasting room and general infrastructure and new plantings are some of the first steps of the partnership. Vineyard: Pressing Matters vineyard is located on the side slopes of the Coal River Valley. Most of these hills are composed of dolerite, a volcanic rock that emerged during the Jurassic period. The soils are alkaline dark clay-silty. Careful rootstock selection was made to take advantage of the high level of active limestone for a better development of the roots and to better reveal the ‘terroir’. These soils are rich in all nutrients, especially in iron, magnesium and manganese, which is very important for obtaining quality in red wines. With more than 20 combinations of clones and rootstocks, some planted on own roots, provides a complex viticultural palate to manage. Generally a green and organic approach applies to all inputs and operations but in wet seasons disease risk is mitigated with chemicals. Work in the vineyard is focused on canopy and vine management and the cultivation and promotion of healthier soils. Taste: Nose – Preserved Lime, Dried Rose Petal, Pear Aromas of preserved lime, dried rose petal, and pear tantalize the senses. Palate – Lime Juice, Pippin Apple, Lychee Hints of Cox’s Orange Pippin apple add a touch of complexity. The palate is clean and clear, with juicy flavours that dance across the tongue.
