Yeringberg Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
$109.99
Product Information: The 2019 release marks just the second straight Cabernet Sauvignon bottling from Yeringberg’s 1999 plantings, making this a highly exclusive wine. Awarded 97 points by Jane Faulkner of the Halliday Wine Companion, she describes it as “a composed and classy Cabernet.” The bouquet is intense yet restrained, with cool, amaro-like herbal hints supporting an array of berry fruits and plum. Iodine notes elevate the intensity, while the palate offers a bright and decidedly medium-bodied experience. With deep concentration and impressive length, this is a Cabernet built to last—cellaring will only enhance its character. Maker: Guill de Pury grew up beside Yeringberg’s then out-of-operation 19th-century winery in Coldstream, where a lack of interest in fine table wines led to production ceasing in 1921. Thanks to Guill and his wife Katherine, who decided to replant the vineyard in 1969, Yeringberg’s historic estate was gradually restored to its former glory. The couple made their first commercial wine in 1974. Since 2008, their daughter Sandra has been responsible for crafting the wines, while her brother David, a PhD holder in plant physiology, manages the vineyards and Yeringberg’s grass-fed lamb and cattle. Sandra’s path to winemaking saw her travel far and wide, from working as a chef in Hong Kong to studying hotel management in Switzerland, earning an MBA at the University of Melbourne, and spending five years as a management consultant. Eventually, her family heritage drew her back to wine, and she completed a degree in oenology to become Yeringberg’s fourth-generation winemaker. She describes her work as “the perfect combination of intellectual, physical, and sensory engagement.” Yeringberg is committed to evolving with the times. Their new winery is in the design phase, and a vine replanting program began in 2020 to mitigate the effects of climate change and phylloxera, establishing two new vineyard sites on south- and east-facing slopes. The future is bright for one of the Yarra Valley’s oldest and most important producers. The Philosophy: As pioneers in the Yarra Valley, the de Pury family is renowned for producing wines of finesse and elegance that reflect the region’s finest qualities. Their wines come from some of the oldest vines in the valley and are produced in tiny quantities. Yeringberg’s red wines, particularly in riper years, exhibit a velvety richness and generosity of flavour while maintaining their varietal character. These long-lived wines, made with the utmost care, are a true testament to Yeringberg’s legacy as one of Australia’s great estates. Nose – Mulberries, Cedar, Cigar Box The bouquet is rich and concentrated with a trace of eucalyptus or menthol overlying deep-set dark-berry and herb aromas, the oak neatly harmonised.
